Cambodian Pop: Anonymous - Hope to meet you

Before this asshole Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge rose to power in Cambodia the 1970s and more or less got rid of everything that could be considered Western, there was apparently a booming musical scene in the country blending traditional music with Western influences. American psychedelic rock band Dengue Fever has put together a nice compilation with some of the music produced in Cambodia before Pol Pot's reign, during which 2 million Cambodians of a total population of 8 million died from executions, overwork, starvation and disease.

One can't help to think about the fact that most of the musicians on the compilation also died because of a megalomaniac madman shortly after recording this amazing music. Some of them not even being recognised by name later, as this nice instrumental I am sharing with you.

Baltic Balkan: Baltic Balkan Swing

I once again caught myself listening to this excellent Baltic Balkan Swing mix, which made me realise I have to share it with you. It's almost a year old but anybody who is yet to peep it, should get a load of this nice swing selection. Perfect for Sunday chilling, but also a nice mix to kick off a party with. Tracks are not mixed flawlessly together and the bpm jumps up and down, but the selection is pure gold. Coherent and swinging all the way through. Let us call this the Boom Shakalaka mix of the week. Encouraged by some guests at one of my shows, I recorded one of my latin sets a few weeks back. From a total of four hours of material, not to make the file too big and long, I cut out a nice 200 minutes slice from the middle of the set. I had a good time playing and you may hear the Peruvian moonshine kick in at some point when the mixing is no longer so smooth :-). Spotify reggaeton playlist

What up crowd? BSL team is back from a short and intensive summer vacay and ready to hit the clubs with full force this fall. A lot of things going on - most notably, the Boom Shakalaka club is switching back to a weekend slot after throwing a few nice summer Thursday parties. Starting from September, we will rock Helsinki every second Saturday of the month with a selection of the best club and dance music the world has to offer. But more about that later, the summer is not over yet...

The past few months I've been running a latin party every two weeks in small Mexico inspired bar called Bar Llamas in Helsinki. Tonight is this summer's last session, which I anticipate is gonna be wild. To give you a preview of what's up, I put together a short reggaeton playlist. Unfortunately Spotify doesn't carry the latest or the best reggaeton tunes available, but here's a selection of some nice party cuts I came across.
