Danza Kuduro: Which one do you prefer?

Oi yoi yoi!!! I hope you get the most out of this track, because it's another one of those tunes you might get sick of hearing in a while.

But, my question is. Which one do you prefer? Lucenzo's original version featuring Big Ali:



...or Don Omar's version featuring Lucenzo:



I personally think Lucenzo could have pulled this one off as a solo. Big Ali and Don Omar do not really contribute musically to the track in any way. All they seem to to do is add market value. I reckon Big Ali's annoying hyping on the cut is to add crossover value for the mainstream market. Whereas Don Omar smelled success in the original version and by making it his own he took it as far as you can get within the latin domain. Still, Lucenzo sounds good and the production is nice. So here are both versions for you to chose from:

Manele: Nicolae Guta - Mr Police

We did a party a week ago at legendary live venue Tavastia in Helsinki. A thing called Balkan madness! together with local balkan promoters/ djs Balkan fever.  It was cool to see people jamming, not just to your basic Shantel, but to stuff like Romanian manele. Which is why I'm sharing a banging manele track called Mr Police! by Nicolae Guta. This is if you wanna rock something in a balkan flavor beyond the gypsy brass sounds:

Cambodian Pop: Anonymous - Hope to meet you

Before this asshole Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge rose to power in Cambodia the 1970s and more or less got rid of everything that could be considered Western, there was apparently a booming musical scene in the country blending traditional music with Western influences. American psychedelic rock band Dengue Fever has put together a nice compilation with some of the music produced in Cambodia before Pol Pot's reign, during which 2 million Cambodians of a total population of 8 million died from executions, overwork, starvation and disease.

One can't help to think about the fact that most of the musicians on the compilation also died because of a megalomaniac madman shortly after recording this amazing music. Some of them not even being recognised by name later, as this nice instrumental I am sharing with you.

Baltic Balkan: Baltic Balkan Swing

I once again caught myself listening to this excellent Baltic Balkan Swing mix, which made me realise I have to share it with you. It's almost a year old but anybody who is yet to peep it, should get a load of this nice swing selection. Perfect for Sunday chilling, but also a nice mix to kick off a party with. Tracks are not mixed flawlessly together and the bpm jumps up and down, but the selection is pure gold. Coherent and swinging all the way through. Let us call this the Boom Shakalaka mix of the week. Encouraged by some guests at one of my shows, I recorded one of my latin sets a few weeks back. From a total of four hours of material, not to make the file too big and long, I cut out a nice 200 minutes slice from the middle of the set. I had a good time playing and you may hear the Peruvian moonshine kick in at some point when the mixing is no longer so smooth :-). Spotify reggaeton playlist

What up crowd? BSL team is back from a short and intensive summer vacay and ready to hit the clubs with full force this fall. A lot of things going on - most notably, the Boom Shakalaka club is switching back to a weekend slot after throwing a few nice summer Thursday parties. Starting from September, we will rock Helsinki every second Saturday of the month with a selection of the best club and dance music the world has to offer. But more about that later, the summer is not over yet...

The past few months I've been running a latin party every two weeks in small Mexico inspired bar called Bar Llamas in Helsinki. Tonight is this summer's last session, which I anticipate is gonna be wild. To give you a preview of what's up, I put together a short reggaeton playlist. Having musically been a few times around the world, we, the Boom Shakalaka team, have also become more aware of our own musical heritage. The finnish, scandinavian, nordic and baltic region has a rich folk music tradition with nice bouncy accordeon rhythms and beautiful fiddle harmonies. To make this material more suitable for the club, we started making remixes of finnish folk music, which we got some great feedback from. One thing lead to another and finally we realised we have a new genre on our hands, which we decided to call Baltik Bass, drawing from the musical traditions of the countries around the Baltic Sea. Here is a first official promotional track, free to download, from the upcoming Maasto Records release Boom Shakalaka presents: Baltik Bass vol. 1. Enjoy!

Tropical Cumbia: Sonora - Isa GT Pa'Chikirri Remix EP

Well, here's another world-around-twister: Isa GT is from Colombia, but lives in London. You might remember her from the tune Pela'O that the italian fidget monsters Crookers remixed back in 2008. Well now Isa Gt (you ever wondered if the GT comes from Gin Tonic?) has got that one and others officially out on Man Recordings as Pa'Chikirri EP. And here's a cumbia remix set of the same EP with tropical dub vibes from Sonora, who is a global beats enthusiast from San Antonio, Texas.

Mix of the Week: Major Lazer & La Roux present Lazer Proof

OK, when Major Lazer and La Roux release their latest mixtape Lazer Proof and an hour later there's a tweet on their twitter that says: "La Roux / Major Lazer mixtape crashed server 200k tried at once!!!" you know there's a serious H Y P E on. Though you normally shouldn't believe the hype, I found myself diggin this one. There's no bangers, but more mellow stuff. So it's actually what good pop music nowadays should sound. I don't weather I'll be listening to after a month anymore, but now it flows quite nicely as backround soundtrack of working. Reggaeton: Chico Ye - Rayo Lazer (Reggaeton Mix)

Remember back in 2005-2006 when Daddy Yankee came with Gasolina and everybody got pretty much sick of the whole reggaeton thing? Well, we here in Boom Shakalaka are feeling that reggaeton might be slowly sneaking back; some dope tracks have been coming out lately and it seems like with the whole 2010 tropical bass movement the reggaeton rhythm doesn't fall too far from the current trend.

Anyway, this one from a mexican producer Chico Ye get the reggaeton beat nicely going and even builds it up with ravey squeeks and accelerating tempo. Hot on it self also, but damn this call for some vocals, so I think it's mash-up time... If you buggers out there get a nice one worked out before I do, make sure to hit us with it!

Merengue: Chino y Nacho - Mi Niña Bonita

This one is definitely not hardcore or street. Venezuelan reggaeton stars Chino & Nacho went corny, poppy and cheesy with this one and I love it! It makes you feel good and it gets your hips moving. This tune is destined to be a summer hit, proved by the fact that Mi Niña Bonita already found its way to the nr. 1 spot on the Billboard latin chart. So, enjoy it while it lasts. I'm guessing you might get pretty sick of this tune after a while.

Cumbia: Max le Daron - Rave Cumbiaton EP

Originally cumbia comes from Latin America, but as many other latin rhythms, it has found a fertile spreading ground in Europe. And sometimes it leads to surprisingly explosive new sounds. Belgiem doesn't sound like the cumbia country number one, but that's where Max le Daron comes from. And as the name of EP suggests, his cumbia has a strong rave twist on it. Many times I've felt other cumbia tracks "too slow" for the dancefloor, but these bangers just keep building into the massive euphoric climax. I mean, they're 100 bpm, but still gettin the floor on fire and hands up in the air.
