The Boom Shakalaka crew has been involved in organising a club night called Sabor, which is all about Latin & Brazilian flavors. In the summer 2012, we had some great terrace parties at mbar and one of them featured a live performance by Elmayonesa and MC Pincho. We managed to catch some of that performance on video! Maaad ting! The next Sabor party is on Saturday 27 October, when we are excited to present a performance by one of the pioneers of electronic cumbia, El Hijo de la Cumbia.

Eu quero TCHU, eu quero TCHA

Here's the official video for the Brazilian hit song of the moment, "Eu Quero Tchu, Eu Quero Tcha" by sertanejo stars João Lucas & Marcelo. The song is probably the biggest example of the "funk-nejo" phenomenon: sertanejo universitario musicians making use of elements from funk carioca. "Tchu tcha tcha tchutchu tcha" is basically the beatbox beat that's been used as the base of the major part of Rio funk songs for a long time. In fact, Mr. Catra, one of the most famous funk MC's, now claims that João Lucas & Marcelo are plagiarizing his beatbox and wants to get compensated for it. Anyway, I think it's fair to say that influence goes both ways - there are also lots of funk tracks influenced by sertanejo.

Spikiri - Ngeke Balunge

Here's a South African kwaito song that was featured in the latest Boom Shakalaka radio show. Spikiri is a Soweto-born kwaito pioneer who's been making music since the 1980's - he was part of the groups MM De Luxe and Trompies, and is considered to be one of the most important figures in the evolution of kwaito. His latest album "The King Don Father 2.5" came out a few months ago. "Ngeke Balunge" features a bunch of fellow S.A. artists - Brown Dash, Teargas, Skhoko, Bricks, Madluphuthu - and is inspired by Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us".
