The Boom Shakalaka crew has been involved in organising a club night called Sabor, which is all about Latin & Brazilian flavors. In the summer 2012, we had some great terrace parties at mbar and one of them featured a live performance by Elmayonesa and MC Pincho. We managed to catch some of that performance on video! Maaad ting! The next Sabor party is on Saturday 27 October, when we are excited to present a performance by one of the pioneers of electronic cumbia, El Hijo de la Cumbia.

Cumbia: Pibes Chetos - El Padrino

Straight from BA / Argentina. Pibes Chetos play cumbia versions of pop and rock hits. As far as I know, this rocking Godfather theme is the only studio recording so far. Some live recordings are also available on their website. Thanks to Olli for the tip. Looking forward to more of this!

Although, I can't understand why they emphasised the 1st and the 2nd beat of the bar, on that otherwise rootsy track. I would love to hear a proper reggae rocking version with the bassdrum on beats 2 and 4. One drop.

Danza Kuduro: Which one do you prefer?

Oi yoi yoi!!! I hope you get the most out of this track, because it's another one of those tunes you might get sick of hearing in a while.

But, my question is. Which one do you prefer? Lucenzo's original version featuring Big Ali:



...or Don Omar's version featuring Lucenzo:



I personally think Lucenzo could have pulled this one off as a solo. Big Ali and Don Omar do not really contribute musically to the track in any way. All they seem to to do is add market value. I reckon Big Ali's annoying hyping on the cut is to add crossover value for the mainstream market. Whereas Don Omar smelled success in the original version and by making it his own he took it as far as you can get within the latin domain. Still, Lucenzo sounds good and the production is nice. So here are both versions for you to chose from:

I really like spicy food and salsa in all forms. And, I have also been diggin the sounds of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition. They came out with some new stuff earlier this year you should check out. Encouraged by some guests at one of my shows, I recorded one of my latin sets a few weeks back. From a total of four hours of material, not to make the file too big and long, I cut out a nice 200 minutes slice from the middle of the set. I had a good time playing and you may hear the Peruvian moonshine kick in at some point when the mixing is no longer so smooth :-).
